True Gentleman's Day of Service
May 2008
The True Gentleman's Day of Service is the day where all the local SAE Chapters come together and do some community service. This year we went to painted, cleaned, and did yardwork for a local children's house. It is a great time to meet different SAE Brothers as well as help the community.
Paddy Murphy Day
April 25th, 2008
This year was the first ever Paddy Murphy Day at Occidental College.
Paddy
Murphy is a tradition for Sigma Alpha Epsilon around the country. Many
chapters celebrate a week of Paddy Murphy but for the first year we
decided to celebrate one epic Paddy Murphy Day. This year we selected Wills Mitchell to be the legendary Paddy Murphy. The legend of Paddy
Murphy is conflicting among all the chapters across the country but the
California Epsilon legend goes as follows:
"In 1920, the Eighteenth Amendment
effectively put an end to the importing, exporting,
transporting, selling, and manufacturing of
liquor and alcohol. This was the beginning
of bootlegging, which rapidly swept across
America in the early 20th century.
Paddy Murphy, according to SAE legend, was a bootlegger who was doing deals with Al Capone, one of America's best known gangsters. During one of the arrangements, a man named Elliot Ness and his company of crime fighters stormed in on the affair to apprehend Murphy. When Ness signaled for Murphy to surrender, he instead reached for a gun, and Ness shot him down.
As Murphy fell to the ground, dying of a wound inflicted by Ness, he gave Ness the secret handshake that only the brothers of SAE know. Ness, an SAE himself, realized that he had killed a brother of his fraternity and ordered that Paddy Murphy have an honorary burial, in recognition of his fallen brother." |
On April 25th, 2008, California
Epsilon dressed up in Tuxedos and marched through
the Occidental Quad. The brothers placed Wills
Mitchell '08 in a coffin as the honorary Paddy Murphy of
the night. Carrying the coffin (with Honorary Paddy
Murphy inside), the brothers marched through the
quad as a memorial ceremony. After the ceremony, a
wake was given and Paddy Murphy was resurrected. The
celebration continue by taking a double decker
English style party bus to the Horse Track where
they serve dollar hot dogs and dollar beers. The
celebration ended at 10:00pm and all 23 brothers and
40 guests were extremely pleased with the first
annual Paddy Murphy. To see the album from the first
annual Paddy Murphy Day click here.
